Prayer is a great blessing for many Christians, but for others it is a problem or a difficult duty.
There are Christians who only pray for a few minutes and then they think they have nothing more to say. Then they become discouraged because they feel inferior.
If you read in a book how Christians have prayed for hours and then seen miraculous acts of God, you may feel compelled to pray at least a whole hour a day. But this gradually becomes a heavy burden.
If you have this problem, stop condemning yourself.
C. Peter Wagner was a lecturer at a Bible school. His knowledge of the Bible and his trust in God were very strong, but he openly admitted that he could not pray for more than twenty minutes. Of course, anyone can recite prayers for hours, but prayer is something completely different, namely meaningful communication with God.
God gave him a huge assignment. He was to found a worldwide prayer movement and organise it as its leader. And that is exactly what he did.
Such a leader is very susceptible to persecution and demonic attacks. He had to pray a lot, but he couldn't pray for more than 20 minutes. He said he needed the support of gifted intercessors. Everyone has their gifts and also their weaknesses.
How can we learn to pray better? If you can only pray meaningfully for a few minutes, then do it, but at least twice a day.
“For who has despised the day of small things? … Zec 4:10 NASB95
It's better to start small and be real with God than to be burdened with meaningless religious duties.
Then you can talk to God briefly and spontaneously during the day.
‘God help me!’ or: ’I don't understand. What do you think?’ or ’Dear God, please make this headache go away. Help me to relax.’
Genuine prayer is personal communication in a personal relationship with God. He loves you.
