Retirement and old age can be a curse. Are you full or regrets over your failures and bad choices? You can look back at so many mistakes in your life. You wish you had made better decisions. What would have happened if …
You can look at the horrible things people had done that hurt you. You wish you had not allowed this or that person to dominate you and rob you of your independent thinking.
I saw my father in his eighties, as his health and his intellectual brilliance deteriorated. He went to bookshops and bought piles of books that he would never read. He so much wanted to keep thinking, although he knew his brain was ageing and his mind was fading and failing.
He progressively slipped into despair, just waiting to die and disappear into nothingness.
But old age can also be a time to rethink, to reconsider, to be open to another dimension.
As my father became helpless and bedridden, he could not read or watch television, but there was an openness to something he had pushed away from his mind when he was mentally and physically able.
My wife and I asked him if we could read the bible to him. He was happy to listen. We would read a chapter to him and ask him if that was enough. As time went by, he even asked to hear more.
Then there came a time when he was happy for us to pray for him.
Eventually he was 88 and my wife asked him if he would like to believe in Jesus and make peace with God. She prayed for him and he squeezed her hand. From that day he was never the same again. The black cloud of despair left him.
I talked to him about his mother and brother who were already in heaven. I told him they were waiting to see him again. Now he listened with positive expectation. Eventually my father died in peace at the age of 91.
Never stop praying for your loved ones. Many people in old age become more difficult, more irritable, more negative, but that does not have to be the end of the story.
Death can be a dreaded departure into darkness, or it can be a wonderful release into a better world with a good God.
I am now 75. Every year is a year closer to heaven. I am learning to let go of negative attitudes that I learned in past years. I am learning to be more tolerant, less critical, less judgemental, although that it still often a challenge.
Old age can be a time of hardening or a time of softening, a time of resignation, or a time of learning and teaching others with the wisdom of reflection.
To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven:
A time to be born, And a time to die; A time to plant, And a time to pluck what is planted; Eccesiastes 3:1–2 NKJV

Seeking God in the Darkness
God sees your suffering and your distress, and it distresses Him. He wants to comfort you.
God sees your need and wants to help you.
God sees you being overwhelmed by the expectations of your family, your employer or your church, and he wants to give you new strength and wisdom. Not all of the duties that are imposed on you are from God.
You silently cry out in your heart, "Where is God?" But God is there, and He wants to open the eyes of your heart so that you can see His love.
Can you hear the silent voice of God?
Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. Rev 3:20 NIV
You are told to read your Bible, but the letters are cold and dead to you. God wants to awaken your spirit.
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone?
Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?
If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! Mt 7:7–11 NIV
Please don't give up. God's heart beats for you. Is God hidden from you? If God is hidden, it is not so that you won't find him, but so that you will seek him and find him.

God Answers Persevering Prayer
Time and again, Jesus taught that our faith connects us with God, that faith releases God's miracle-working power.
Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak.
She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.”
Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart, daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed at that moment. Mt 9:20–22 NIV
But is it true that you cannot receive anything from God if you do not expect God's grace and do not pray for it yourself?
The apostle Paul was not always the holy man of God.
For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 1 Cor 15:9 NIV
Did Saul, the brutal Pharisee, pray for God's mercy?
Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priest… Acts 9:1 NIV
Saul was authorised by the high priest to arrest the Christians in Damascus.
As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him.
He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”
“Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. Acts 9:3–5 NIV
God acts when people believe, but Saul only believed when he received a visitation from Jesus.
What role did faith play? Jesus taught that we must love our enemies.
But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, Mt 5:44 NIV
Saul was the leader of the persecution and the Christians prayed for him. God hears our prayers for ourselves, but also for others.
In Islamic countries, Christians are cruelly persecuted, but millions of Muslims experience visitations from Jesus, mostly in dreams. Many believe immediately, but many believe later, sometimes only after years. Many probably never believe, despite God's grace. God respects our free will.
Why does this happen? Islamic countries are bombarded by evangelistic outreach, through radio, satellite TV and the internet. At the same time, millions of Christians are praying for Muslims and God is answering our prayers. The faith of Christians is sparking the intervention of God.
There was an Islamic preacher in Africa who was considered a holy fundamentalist, but he was a hypocrite who was secretly involved in sins. Then he reaped what he had sown and he was about to die with AIDS.
Then he saw Jesus next to his deathbed. Jesus healed him and he became a Christian preacher. The Christians had obviously prayed for him.
Do you have children who are mentally ill or addicted to drugs for a long time, or involved in prostitution? Please never give up!
I prayed for my family for years. My parents didn't believe until they were on their deathbeds. I have seen lost children restored after years of prayer.
Do you have enemies that torment you? Pray for your enemies. Jesus died for your enemies too.
Spiritual Warfare
We
see in the New Testament that the war has already been won. The devil
was defeated by Jesus on the cross. But if Jesus has already won the
war, why do we still have to fight? Do we still have to fight? Of course
we do.
Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. Eph 6:11 NIV
But some say we don't have to fight because the battle is not ours; the battle belongs to the Lord.
But
this passive view leads to disaster. Turkey was once a region where the
gospel spread marvellously. But the Christians gradually became
religious and no longer devoted disciples.
Then Islam came and
Christianity was almost one hundred per cent abolished. The devil can
win battles if we don't hold on to Jesus and fight for our faith with
God's power.
… for the battle is the LORD’s, … 1 Sam 17:47 NIV
This
Bible text is often quoted and misinterpreted. It is said that we do
not have to fight against the devil because the battle does not belong
to us, but to the Lord.
All
those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the
LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give all of you
into our hands.” 1 Sam 17:47 NIV
But
we must understand Bible texts in context. David said these words and
then he fought against the soldier of Satan and struck Goliath dead with
the supernatural help of the Lord.
There
are situations where we must fight the devil with God's help and we may
defeat the devil, not with our own strength, but by God intervening
supernaturally because the battle belongs to the Lord.
I prayed
for a long time for some women who were mentally ill. These were not
passive prayers, but a battle in the spirit with the help of God's
Spirit. I persevered in prayer for a long time, and not just for a few
years. I then saw amazing improvements.
Anyone who does not
believe in spiritual warfare and does not believe that miracles are
necessary understands very little about Christian love and prayer.
You don't need a miracle until you need a miracle.

God Gives us Hope
The environmental activists may be right. Our planet is so poisoned that it could become uninhabitable. But God is the Creator, and He has not retired.
Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. Rev 21:1 NIV
We will all die. What is the most dangerous job? Retirement.
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live,
and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” Jn 11:25–26 NRSV
Have you failed? Are you stressed or threatened because of your mistakes or sins?
The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases, his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Lam 3:22–23 NRSV
Are you harshly persecuted? Are you being harassed? God stands by you.
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? Rom 8:31 NKJV
Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me! For my soul trusts in You; And in the shadow of Your wings I will make my refuge, Until these calamities have passed by.
I will cry out to God Most High, To God who performs all things for me. Ps 57:1–2 NKJV
Are you sick? Jesus healed all who sought healing. He never rejected anyone who was sick. He never changed.
When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick,
that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “He Himself took our infirmities And bore our sicknesses.” Mt 8:16–17 NKJV
Have you prayed but are still sick?
He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless.
Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted;
but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Is 40:29–31 NRSV
Before the war there were no antibiotics. A British preacher prayed for healing from tuberculosis, but he did not experience a quick miraculous healing. He continued to pray and God instructed him to pray for two hours every day. He obeyed and gradually got well.
Please never give up!

The Way out of Nomansland
Are you in no man's land?
Do you need healing? You have prayed. You have believed. The symptoms are diminishing, but your recovery is obviously not complete.
Hold fast to God's promises!
Before the last world war, penicillin had not yet been invented. An English preacher had tuberculosis and prayed for healing.
He did not get an instant cure, but he sought the guidance of the Holy Spirit. God told him to pray two hours a day and he would recover.
He was obedient and he gradually became completely well.
Many sick Christians pray for healing, but they are disappointed. When Jesus healed before the cross, he never failed. He healed everyone who prayed for healing, without exception.
What can we learn from Jesus? He had different methods. For example, he often healed by laying his hand on someone.
Jesus also gave instructions to his disciples.
And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues;
they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.” Mk 16:17–18 NIV
It is curious that Jesus first emphasises deliverance from demons. When Jesus healed the sick before the cross, he often cast out demons, because sickness is often associated with demonic activity.
And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. Acts 10:38 NLT
Jesus was the anointed one par excellence. He was always full of the Holy Spirit and ministered with unlimited power, but we need more help from the Holy Spirit.
An important and very powerful tool is the gift of tongues.
Some think that this gift was only for the first Christians, but in Mark 16:17-18 Jesus speaks of the signs that are to follow those who believe.
And these signs will accompany those who believe: …. they will speak in new tongues;
This statement is not limited in time.
To release God's miraculous power, we need to cultivate a deep relationship with God through the Holy Spirit.
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.
And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. Rom 8:26–27 NIV
How can we enter into this deep realm? Paul gives us an important indication of how he cultivated his close relationship with God.
I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 1 Cor 14:18 NIV
Paul explained that he did not want to speak in languages in meetings because he wanted to help people through prophecy or Bible teaching.
So when did Paul speak so much in languages? In his personal prayers.
When we cultivate our relationship with God through the Holy Spirit, we learn to perceive the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
We can learn to receive God's specific instructions, like this English preacher who was told to pray two hours a day to receive God's healing.

Miraculous Death Bed Conversion
Has your life never gone wrong? I've often messed up and often had bad experiences. You probably have too. When we seem like innocent angels as babies, we don't stay that way for long.
Before my conversion, I was in a fix with no way out.
Many people come to faith in a crisis.
But after we discover Jesus, are the crises finally gone for good? Unfortunately not.
But we have to learn to trust God even in crises. Yes, we can learn to thank Jesus for the hard times. Why?
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.
Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;
perseverance, character; and character, hope.
And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. Ro 5:1–5 NIV
I came to Jesus at a traumatic time and I have also come closer to Jesus through suffering.
Jesus is very familiar with crises and trials and he knows very well how to lead us through the darkness.
Jesus was rejected, despised, lonely, tortured and unjustly executed. He understands all our difficulties and disappointments.
My father was 70 years old and his lungs were dangerously damaged. He had been smoking 40 cigarettes a day for years and he had been suffering from emphysema, where you slowly and irresistibly lose your breath.
The lungs no longer work and you are suffocated by the disease. My father had two older brothers who had the same disease. One died at the age of 59 and the other at 65.
He was not yet a believer and had no hope in heaven. I begged God to save my father. Finally, I began to ask God that mine would not die until he believed.
He retired at the age of 79. At 85, he had to be cared for in a nursing home. At 88, he believed and made peace with God.
When he was 90 years old, I asked God to finally let my father die because he was partially blind and demented and his life was full of suffering and pain.
When he turned 91, I thought of Psalm 91:16.
‘I will satisfy him with long life and let him see my salvation.’
Then I said to God, ‘What if you could take my father to heaven exactly 16 days after his 91st birthday.’
And that is exactly what happened.
