If you believe in Jesus and trust God with all your heart, you need not fear death.
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me.
In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? Jn 14:1–2 NRSV
When Lazarus died, his sister was devastated.
“Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. Jn 11:21 NIV
Jesus comforted her with the promise that our life does not end with earthly death.
Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” Jn 11:23–24 NIV
Martha already believed this, but Jesus wanted to reveal something even better to her.
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,
and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” Jn 11:25–26 ESV
She believed this to some extent, but Jesus wanted to far exceed her expectations.
Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, Eph 3:20 NKJV
Lazarus had been dead for four days, but Jesus brought him back to life, not just restored, but no longer sick.
No matter how weak your faith may be, Jesus wants to help you.
No matter how strong your faith is, Jesus wants to exceed your expectations.
God is better than you think.
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jer 29:11 NKJV

God Helps in your Deep Need
If we have no need, we do not need a miracle from God. If we can manage it humanly on our own, we often try to do just that.
Barak Obama became president and tried to win the support of the world with the well-known words, ‘Yes, we can!’ But despite these words, he has failed in many ways.
Angela Merkel has taken the same line: ‘We can do it!’ She still says so, but has it worked?
Politicians claim that Islam is a religion of peace, but where do we find peace in the Middle East?
After 1990, a new era began, where the Russians were supposed to be our democratic partners in a new world order, but now we see a not-so-friendly leader in Moscow.
Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will protect you with my victorious right hand. Isaiah 41:10
God does not deceive us with false assurance and hollow promises. Where there is no threat, we do not need encouragement to overcome fear.
The prophet David, king of Israel, had to confront real threats. He left us many psalms that testify to his struggle against fear.
Be merciful to me, my God, for my enemies are in hot pursuit; all day long they press their attack.
My adversaries pursue me all day long; in their pride many are attacking me.
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. Ps 56:1–3 NIV
These are our invincible weapons against fear, the testimonies of those who have overcome danger and fear.
God's word is not just made up of dogmas and commandments, but also of totally reliable promises. They are reliable for two reasons.
Firstly, they come from God, who will never let us down because he is completely truthful and also almighty.
We can also rely on God's promises because they have been proven in hard times of affliction.
God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Ps 46:1 NASB95
The words in the Bible are not just words. God has kept his promises again and again in the Bible stories.
I have seen time and again how God has saved me and others from death, illness, poverty and unemployment.
So often we expect our parents, partners, friends, doctors, communities, employers or politicians to provide the help we urgently need. Sometimes we get help from people and sometimes they let us down.
But God has never let me down. I have often seen God intervene in humanly impossible circumstances.
It is often precisely in impossible situations that we have to make a decision. Should we panic or just seek human help? Panic doesn't work at all and passive resignation is like death itself.
But we have a God who gave his son to death but then raised him from the dead. Jesus died so that we can always find a way out of any situation.
Jesus said before his death:
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies,
and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?” Jn 11:25–26 NASB95
God has work for the unemployed, healing for the sick, joy for the depressed, a future for the hopeless.
When Christian children in Syria or Iraq are beheaded by terrorists because they refuse to become Muslims, they are immediately caught up and their souls appear in God's heaven, where they immediately receive God's comfort and love.
Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices; my body also rests secure.
For you do not give me up to Sheol, or let your faithful one see the Pit.
You show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy; in your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Ps 16:9–11 NRSV

Are you in the Middle of a Miracle?
The disciples were disappointed, paralysed with confusion and fear.
When Jesus arrived in Jerusalem, he was greeted with jubilation as the Messiah. Everyone expected the Son of David to fulfil the prophecies.
Jesus was to establish a new kingdom in Israel and cast out the Romans.
Instead, Jesus was arrested as a criminal and executed on the cross.
Not only had they lost their champion.
When Jesus was arrested, they had fled like cowards.
They had lost their support and were ashamed that they themselves had failed.
But it was even worse. They were terrified. Would the religious leaders arrest and kill them too?
They were also probably sleepless and exhausted.
How long did the disciples tremble in this fearful despair?
But they did not realise that they were in the midst of a miracle.
When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons.
She went and told those who had been with him and who were mourning and weeping.
When they heard that Jesus was alive and that she had seen him, they did not believe it. Mk 16:9–11 NIV
Are you disappointed? Have others let you down? Have you failed yourself?
Jesus wants to come to you, but sometimes he waits.
Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were eating; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen. Mk 16:14 NIV
Despite everything, God has good plans for you. He loves you.
I prayed for my parents for years. Finally, they both came to faith on their deathbeds.
Are you stressed with the wait? Please never give up.
The desperate apostles were in the midst of an amazing miracle. Are you too? Why not?

Jesus took your Shame and Guilt
Jesus died for you to take your punishment upon himself. You no longer need to carry your shame. Don't be ashamed any more. Jesus hung stark naked on the cross to bear your shame.
But we do not believe in a deceased martyr. Jesus came back from the grave. He rose again in the flesh so that we can be sure that his promises are true and reliable.
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies,
and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?” Jn 11:25–26 NASB95
What does it mean to believe in Jesus? Have you entrusted your life to Jesus?
When Jesus died, his disciples panicked and despaired. We, too, are weak. But despite their doubts and misunderstandings, they still loved Jesus.
On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”
After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. Jn 20:19–20 NIV
But Thomas was not there. He was traumatised and could not believe until Jesus came to him too. Despite his doubts, he still loved Jesus. When he saw Jesus, the scales fell from his eyes.
Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Jn 20:27–28 NIV
Jesus knew their hearts and his love for them was even stronger. So it is with Jesus and you. If your heart is attached to Jesus despite everything, you must be sure that his love for you is immeasurably stronger.
If you are like Thomas, if your heart is attached to Jesus, you have eternal life. Your old life is over.

Resurrection Power for You
When Jesus was arrested in the garden, the disciples panicked.
Peter went berserk.
Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.) Jn 18:10 NIV
Then Jesus was arrested, and the apostles fled.
All of them deserted him and fled. Mk 14:50 NRSV
Peter tried to remain faithful, but he too failed.
Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They asked him, “You are not also one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” Jn 18:25 NRSV
Jesus prepared his disciples very well for this tough test. Nevertheless, they failed.
Jesus had given them wonderful promises.
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me.
In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. Jn 14:1–3 NRSV
These marvellous promises in the Gospel of John are also for us. Perhaps the Holy Spirit has personally communicated comforting assurances, as he did with the apostles at that time. Nevertheless, you have often failed, and so have I.
Take courage. Jesus visited the apostles after His resurrection. Then He gave them His Holy Spirit and glory.
God transformed them.
Jesus understands that we don't just need Bible knowledge and doctrines. We often need powerful experiences and dramatic visitations because we are weak without God's presence.
Jesus also wants to transform us, you and me. Expect God to do something powerful in your life. Don’t be content with passive conformity to evangelical customs and formulas.

MARY MAGDALENE, THE CHOSEN WOMAN
- Was Mary Magdalene unspiritual to think Jesus was the gardener?
- He was not shining with resurrection glory.
- His beard was plucked out by the Roman soldiers who tormented him.
Jesus was scarred and battered and perhaps not easily recognisable.
We must not blame Mary Magdalene for this mistaken identity. She was closer to Jesus than any of the apostles at this time.
- Mary Magdalene was chosen for the highest possible privilege, to be the first witness of the resurrection.
According to Josephus, women were not accepted as witnesses in Jewish court cases. - I have found no evidence that this disqualification of women’s rights was authorised by God in Scripture but it is clear that the testimony of a woman did not carry the same weight as that of a man in the ancient world and the Jews were no exception.
When Jesus died on the cross, the innocent son of God suffered the ultimate injustice. With his unjust death, Jesus paid the penalty for all our sins.
The only completely innocent human being in history died a cruel death, so that every guilty man and woman could be set free from the just condemnation of God.
- When Jesus died a cruel and unjust death, He set about correcting all the curses and injustices that had followed like a plague on humanity after the fall of Adam and Eve in that first garden.
The first injustice was prophesied by God Himself when He declared that women after Eve would desire the love of their husbands but that their husbands would rule over them harshly.Ge 3:16 (ESV) To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.”
Not only have billions of husbands ruled like tyrants over their wives but men in general have treated women like second class human beings.- The Jews in Bible days were also guilty of this but a quick look at church history and contemporary church life will tell you that men still dominate women in a way that God did not intend.
When Jesus returned from the grave, His first act was to restore full equality and dignity to women.
Mary Magdalene was divinely appointed to be the first witness of the resurrection, not Peter or John and not Mary the mother of Jesus.Mary Madgalene thought Jesus was the gardener. The first gardener was Adam and Paul said Jesus was the LAST ADAM.
1Corinthians 15:45 (NKJV) And so it is written, "The first man Adam became a living being." The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.
1 Corinthians 15:22 (NKJV) For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.
- Adam was the first man and the father of all humanity. He was without sin before he yielded to temptation.
- Jesus came as the second sinless man and He resisted every temptation.
- Jesus came to restore men, women and children to the glorious innocence and justice of the original creation, to establish a new humanity where women and men would be completely equal and free to fulfil their potential.
When Mary Magdalene and her friends told the Apostles of the new church that Jesus was alive, the men did not believe the women. - Jesus came to restore men, women and children to the glorious innocence and justice of the original creation, to establish a new humanity where women and men would be completely equal and free to fulfil their potential.
- Then Jesus appeared to them and rebuked them for not believing the women.
- For two thousand years men have continued to punish women for the disobedience of Eve.
- Ordained priests and pastors have exalted themselves above church members.
