Life is a gift. Everything we are and have comes from God. The Bible presents God to us as Father and Mother.
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. Jas 1:17 NIV
And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. Php 4:19 NIV
But also in the Bible, our God reveals himself as love, with a tenderness that we expect from a good mother.
But Zion said, “The LORD has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me.”
“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! Is 49:14–15 NIV
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. Mt 23:37 NIV
God is spirit, neither female nor male, but the Bible emphasises his fatherhood rather than his motherhood for two reasons.
There are many pagan religions that worship mother goddesses, often in a carnal and sexual way. The Bible makes it very clear that the true and living God is totally different from the pagan cults that worshipped sexual goddesses through cult prostitution.
The second reason is the fact that God is strong, the Almighty, whose abilities are limitless, who can do everything, who can totally protect us and wants to help us.
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Is 41:10 NIV
Your life is a gift from God.
But if you believe in Jesus, you have something more, something infinitely important and wonderful. You have eternal life, a personal fellowship with God. You can know God as your Father and Him as your best friend.
You can also experience the motherly tenderness of the Holy Spirit, and not only in church services, but in your daily life and in your private times of prayer.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2 Cor 5:17 NKJV
No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. Jn 15:15 NKJV
Just as Jesus invited his first disciples into his holy friendship, he also wants to invite you to become his personal friend. You cannot earn this. You must receive God's friendship through trust.
This is not just for pastors, chosen saints or church leaders.
It is for you.
