Staying Positive in Troubled Times

 As a little boy I loved listening to my father’s classical music recordings. One of my favourite recordings was of a German Jewish men’s choir who sang lovely German folk songs even during the Nazi period.

One of the all-time favourite movies is “The Sound of Music”. It tells of the Austrian von Trapp family, who were strongly anti-Nazi. They had to escape over the mountains to Switzerland to avoid persecution. What is striking in this movie is their love of God and positive human values. They were more for God and people than against the Nazis. It was their faith and love that drove them, rather than hatred of the Nazis.

They were determined to stay positive.

Maria von Trapp sang about her favourite things. When she was upset, she would think about her favourite things.

When I read the news, I am shocked by what national leaders are doing. I have been crying out for Ukraine since the Russian invasion in 2022. I have seen God work miracles to protect Ukrainians. It is amazing that the Russians have not been able to conquer these people. God must be with Ukraine.
But hating Putin will solve nothing. He is what he is.

Valentin Silvestrov is a Ukrainian musician who fled to Berlin in 2022. In Berlin, he composed music, but not angry nationalistic music. He set the Lord’s Prayer to music. 

In very troubled times, it is so easy to become obsessed with fear and anger, but God is still God.

We can pray:
“Your will be done, on earth, as it is in Heaven.”

The Apostle Paul’s life was full of persecution and suffering. He was a brutal persecutor of the Christians and then as a Christian he suffered equally brutal persecution himself.
He wrote:

We are hard-pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair;
persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 2 Cor 4:8–9 NIV

And in another letter he wrote:

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Php 4:6–8 NIV

Positive thinking was not invented by American writers of self-help books. It comes from the Bible, because God is positive and he loves you.

God's Amazing Protection in Wartime

 1944 was a terrible time in Germany. The war was as good as lost, but the Nazis were still in power. British and American air raids became more and more intense. Day and night, thousands and thousands of civilians lost their lives.

During this traumatic time, a German preacher, Hermann Zaiss, lived in Solingen, a neighbourhood in Wuppertal. He had suffered a lot in his life.

He was a prisoner of war for 4 years during the First World War.  Then he served as an evangelist in Germany, but he was persecuted by the Christians because he was a Pentecostal. Then his wife became mentally ill, chronically psychotic.

His heart was broken. He could no longer bear it. He decided to turn away from God. He still believed, but he told God he wanted nothing more to do with him.

“I told God: ‘If you are alive and have an interest in me and your love for me is so great, then come and get me again after 20 years!’”

He divorced his mentally ill wife, became very successful as an entrepreneur and remarried.

Then came the terrible bombing raids in Germany. Everyone was gripped by panic and despair.

As early as 1939, his wife Clara had found her way to God through prayer for her seriously ill daughter. God had healed her daughter and she begged her husband again and again to resume his ministry and help the suffering people.

On 22 July 1944, exactly 20 years after turning away from God, Hermann and Clara knelt down in the bombed-out Protestant church in Ohligs and prayed: ‘Lord, if you want us back, here we are.’ He received a clear commission from God to preach the gospel boldly and with power.

Hermann started a house group and God blessed this small beginning. Many desperate neighbours sought Gods help.

The meetings grew larger. They prayed together and trusted God to protect them from the bombs.

In November 1944, Solingen was bombed and thousands lost their lives. Then Hermann Zaiss heard on the radio that the bombers were on their way to his neighbourhood in Ohligs. He went into the garden and prayed for protection and peace.

Shortly afterwards, he heard again on the radio that the bombers had turned away for no apparent reason.

There were also faithful Christians on the British side who prayed for protection.

Colonel Whittlesey was the commander of a British regiment in the Second World War. He was a Christian. He ordered his soldiers to recite Psalm 91 every day. The regiment was in fierce fighting for five years and not a single man was killed.

A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. Ps 91:7 NIV

If God protected many German civilians from bomb attacks during the war and also saved British soldiers, you can be sure that He can also help you during this time and wants to save you.

Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
This I declare about the LORD: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.

For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. Ps 91:1–3 NLT

God's Peace in Wartime

 Valentin Silvestrov is a wonderful Ukrainian musician, a composer of classical music.

Shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, his family urged him to flee the country, and he reluctantly agreed. Aged 84 he escaped with his daughter and granddaughter to Poland and then to Berlin, where he settled as a refugee.

As he fled to safety and freedom, he heard music in his mind, but he said he was surprised that it did not reflect the fear and trauma he left behind in Ky iv. It was heavenly peaceful music, lovely setting of the Lord’s Prayer.

Silvestrov describes Putin as a terrorist like Bin Laden but a thousand times more dangerous. Nevertheless, his music is not angry or nationalistic but rather peaceful and prayerful.

Jesus said to his disciples:

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not be afraid. Jn 14:27 NIVUK84

God's Protection in War and Crisis

Now we are again in a life-threatening crisis. Many are dying in India, in Brazil but also in North America and Europe. Many are terrified of the virus and others dread the vaccine.

If God protected many German civilians from bombing during the war and also saved British soldiers, you can be sure that he can also help you at this time and wants to save you.

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.”

Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from the perilous pestilence. Ps 91:1–3 NKJV

For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. Psalm 91:3 NLT

WHO DOES GOD LOVE?

Who does God love? 

He loves His Son, Jesus Christ. 

Jesus said:

The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand. John 3:35 (NKJV) 

God loves the world and every human being on earth.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16 (NKJV) 

God loves people who do not believe in Him.

For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. Romans 5:6 (NKJV) 

"I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me; I was found by those who did not seek me. To a nation that did not call on my name, I said, 'Here am I, here am I.' Isaiah 65:1 (NIV) 

A young Jewish man in Romania did not believe in God but he had an empty place in his soul. 

He was fascinated by the faith of people who believed in a Divine Being. One day he saw a church service and he went in and stood at the back. 
Then he spoke to God and said:
“Oh God, if you exist and I am sure you do not ... but if you do exist, I hold that it is not my duty to believe but it is your duty to show yourself to me.”
One day this young man was on a long journey in the countryside. He stopped in a village to ask for a place to sleep. An old Christian man had been praying for many years for the privilege of leading a Jew to faith in Jesus Messiah. When he recognised this young traveller as a Jew, he eagerly offered him hospitality and treated him like royalty. He gave him a Bible to read, a Bible which he had prayed over fervently. 
The young atheist read the Bible and Jesus came alive to him as he read. He began to weep and became a believer as he perceived the living truth and felt the living presence of the risen Jesus Christ, Messiah of Israel.
He began to share his faith and was persecuted by the Nazi German occupation. Then the Soviet Red Army came and the persecution was worse. But Richard Wurmbrand continued to fearlessly reach out even to the officers of the Red Army. 
The preacher asked a Communist officer if he believed in God and the soldier replied he had no orders to believe in such a Being. Then the preacher challenged him. “But you pray, don’t you.” The atheist looked like a naughty child caught raiding the kitchen in the night. His defences were down and he freely confessed:
When the Germans surrounded us at Stalingrad, we all prayed. We prayed: “Oh God and Spirit of Mother, save us!” 
The preacher said that was a very good prayer, the cry of the heart.

God loves the Jews for ever because He swore to be faithful to the offspring of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob.

'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living." Matthew 22:32 (NKJV)

The survival of the Jewish people as a distinct people group through two thousand years of dispersion is a miraculous work of God. No other people has been dispersed as widely for so long without losing their identity. 

God’s love is unconditional and for everyone. Does that mean everyone will enjoy God’s love forever? God has given you and me a choice. We can choose to love Him and enjoy His presence and favour in eternal loving friendship or we can persist in ignoring or rejecting Him. 

If you choose to live without God in this world, then you will continue forever without Him, without His goodness, without His love, without His favour, without His life.

And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.  Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. 1 John 5:11-12 (ESV)
